Your first job does not require a perfect history
Graduate employers are often assessing potential, learning ability and basic professional habits. National service, internships, volunteering, student leadership and final-year projects can all provide useful evidence when described accurately.
Focus on what you delivered: records organised, customers assisted, research completed, events coordinated, software used or problems solved.
Target realistic entry points
- Graduate trainee and management trainee programmes
- Assistant, coordinator and junior officer roles
- Customer service and sales positions
- Internships with defined learning and responsibilities
- Project, research and field-support roles
Translate education into employer value
Do not only list course titles. Select projects that demonstrate analysis, communication, teamwork or technical ability. Explain the goal, your contribution, the tools used and the outcome in one or two concise lines.
Close one skill gap at a time
Compare ten vacancies for your target role and note repeated requirements. Choose the most common realistic gap—perhaps Excel, bookkeeping software, customer support, digital marketing, data analysis or professional writing—and build demonstrable competence.
A certificate is strongest when supported by a project or practical example.
Use a weekly graduate-search routine
- Apply to a small number of well-matched roles.
- Improve one CV achievement or portfolio example.
- Contact one relevant professional or alumni connection respectfully.
- Practise one interview answer using a real example.
- Review responses and adjust your target when evidence suggests it.
